Sunday March 16- Bayleys Real Estate Series Race 1
A good fleet of 6 boats registered for the first race in the Bayleys Real Estate Series: Transition, Raging Hormones, One Way, Escapade, Lightly Oiled and Penzance. It was a wonderful summery day but only one thing was lacking – wind! After waiting for more than an hour the race was abandoned. While that is bad news for us I guess it is potentially better news for our Sponsors – Bayleys Real Estate as one cannot imagine a better day for showing homes in our wonderful harbour setting.
There is no racing here in Akaroa next week but the South Island Young 88 Owners Championships will be held at Naval Point in Lyttleton.
Sunday March 9 – Akaroa Dolphins Regatta Day 2
Four boats competed in Day 2 of the Akaroa Dolphins Regatta. Course 45 was used for the first race (Start – Kaik – Childrens Bay – Kaik – Childrens Bay – finish). As much of this course is out of sight of the startbox there is little I can comment on. Hyperactive dominated the fleet finishing in 1-39-01 almost 7 minutes ahead of One Way with a further minute back to Future One and then Sneaky Heat.
A shorter course was chosen for the second race Course 31 – (start – Green Point – Childrens Bay twice – finish). At the half way point Hyperactive was leading One Way then Future One and Sneaky heat. In the latter part of the race One Way managed to get ahead of Hyperactive at mark 2 and the two boats took different tacks to get to the finish with One Way prevailing by just 13 seconds. Future One was third and Sneaky Heat fourth. Handicaps played a significant part in the results and the overall series was very tight with only a point separating each of the first 3 boats.
We really appreciate the ongoing support of the Waghorn Family and Akaroa Dolphins. This family business brings so much to Akaroa. Next week we will have the first race in the Bayleys Real Estate series starting at 1400.
Sunday March 2 – Akaroa Dolphins Regatta Day 1
Due to the dreadful weather in early January when the Dolphins Regatta was due to occur it was rescheduled to this and next Sunday. A fleet of six boats competed on Day 1 starting with a light harbour draft from the south. A short course was chosen for the first race – start – Green Point – Lushingtons – Green Point – finish. One Way took the lead from the start and was first around the first mark. The light and shifty winds ade crossing the harbour to Lushingtons a real challenge with the boats taking a range of different options. One Way and Hyperactive were first around the mark followed by Transition and Raging Hormones and then Future One and Escapade. The winds were shifting around towards the northwest by this point and they came back under spinnaker. Again different course choices were made and Future One was first around the mark followed closely by One Way and Hyperactive then Transition, Escapade and Raging Hormones. This order was also the finishing order with Future One, who had passed the whole fleet in the previous leg, winning in 1.06.26 13 seconds ahead of One Way and a further 15 seconds back to Hyperactive. Transition was next, in conditions that did not suit her, then Escapade and Raging Hormones.
Race 2 was on a slightly longer course 44 (start – Kaik – Lushingtons – Tikao – Green Point – home) as the wind had picked up a little (but not much). Transition was first around the mark at Lushingtons followed by Raging Hormones and One Way who were neck and neck. Hyperactive was next then Future One and Escapade. By the time they got to Tikao Transition had a solid lead and the next 3 Young 88s had closed up on each other with One Way ahead of Raging Hormones and Hyperactive then Future One and Escapade. Transition won in 1.34.13 four minutes ahead of a group of 3 Young 88s One Way a minute ahead of Hyperactive and then a further 20 seconds to Raging Hormones, followed by Future One and Escapade.
Click the link below for the full results and series standings after the first day of the regatta. Day 2 will be next Sunday starting at 1300 and there will be a prizegiving following the conclusion of the racing. Thanks to the Waghorn family and Akaroa Dolphins for their sponsorship of one of our premiere events. If you are not on a yacht their boats are the second best way to experience the harbour – and also much more comfortable than sailing and independent of the wind.
Saturday March 1 – Saunders Robinson Brown Two Handed Series Race 4
A fleet of 4 for the fourth race in the Saunders Robinson Brown Two Handed series on a lovely early autumn day with a brisk southerly at the start. Course 57 was chosen. After a fairly tight start the fleet headed off to the Kaik and when they came back into sight, on the way to Lushingtons, Future One was in the lead from Raging Hormones and then Escapade and One Way. Future One was first round the mark followed by Escapade and Raging Hormones who were very close together. The boats took different courses back across the harbour to Green Point and Escapade managed to get ahead of Future One. Escapade was first across the line in 1.34.54 almost 3 minutes ahead of Future One with Raging Hormones less than a minute further back and then One Way.
As this is a 5 race series the boats can drop their worst performance after this race and this has had a major effect on the series points. Click below to find these points and the handicap results for todays race. The final race in the series is scheduled for Saturday 5 April.
Huge thanks to Saunders Robinson Brown Law who sponsor this series. If you are looking for a lawyer they should be your first point of call.
February 23 – Akaroa Moorings Mark Foy Series Race 2
Five boats came to the line for the second race in the Akaroa Moorings Mark Foy Series. The scratch boat was Sneaky Heat followed 3 minutes later by Escapade then Raging Hormones on 6 minutes, One Way on 7 minutes and Transition on 10 minutes.
As the wind was very light course 1 was chosen as it gives multiple opportunities to shorten course. This was important and the eventual course was start to Green Point to Lushingtons and finish. Mark Foys are designed to ideally have all the boats finishing at the same time. While the fleet did spread the leading two were very close with Escapade across the line barely ahead of Raging Hormones. One Way was third, then Transition and Sneak Heat. In the series overall Raging Hormones and Transition both scored 6 points and both had a second as their best result. Consequently the order in the last race determined the series winner – Congratulations to Raging Hormones. Click the link below for full results (Thanks to Jamie Unsted, myITmanager, for fixing our website).
Thanks to Akaroa Moorings for sponsoring this series – They do a vital job for the whole boating community here in the harbour.
Next week the 4th two handed race will be on Saturday (1400) and the first 2 races of the rescheduled Akaroa Dolphins regatta will be on Sunday (1300). We wish all the best to Whistler 3 and Outrageous as they compete in the South Island Young 88 Championships at Naval Point.

Gluyas Motor Group Series Sprint Races and overall results
Sunday February 9 – Gluyas Motor Group Series Race 2
A fleet of 6 came to the line for the third race of the Gluyas series. The wind was a brisk SW and course 2 (Start, Green Point, Lushingtons, Paua Farm, Lushingtons, Green Point, Childrens Bay, finish) was chosen. The windy conditions meant some boats had a few issues in the lead up to the start but all were safely away. Whistler 3 established an early lead as the fleet sailed towards Lushingtons. Some squally showers made it difficult to see the fleet on the far side of the harbour. Fortunately the weather cleared and when they came back into sight from the Paua Farm Whistler was in the lead with Penzance fairly close behind. Meltdown was next then, fairly close together, Raging Hormones and One Way with Future One a bit further back.
This order remained through the rest of the race although Penzance gave Whistler a run for their money and Raging Hormones made up considerable ground on Meltdown. Future One had some sail issues on the way to Childrens Bay but overcame these. Once again handicaps played a big part in the overall results and, with three sprint races next Sunday starting at 1300, and boats being able to discard their worst performance after 5 races have been completed in the series it is still anyone’s game.
Once again thank you to Gluyas Motor Group of Ashburton who are sponsoring this series.

Sunday February 2 – Gluyas Motor Group Series Race 2
There was a fleet of 7 for the second race in the Gluyas Motor Group series on an overcast day with light SW breezes. Course 10 was chosen, given the light winds, as it is one that can be shortened if necessary (It was not necessary as the wind picked up a little). After an interesting start the fleet sailed to Green Point and then to Lushingtons where Transition led around the mark followed by Whistler 3, Meltdown, Escapade, Raging Hormones, One Way and Future One. From there they sailed to the Paua Farm and back to Childrens Bay where Transition was just ahead of Whistler. These two fought a tight battle for the rest of the race (Green Point, Childrens Bay, finish) with several lead changes and, at the end, Transition crossed the line by the tightest of margins. Meltdown was third and, in dying winds, Raging Hormones managed to overtake Escapade to finish 5th. Sailing can be a cruel sport as the wind died almost to nothing and Future One (who had started late due to some pre-start issues) and One Way (who like Escapade was sailing 2 handed) drifted over the line 16 and 18 minutes later after fighting out the last few legs very tightly.
Next week we host the Wellington – Akaroa race which starts in Wellington on Waitangi Day. See the newsletter for full details. Next Sunday is the 3rd race in the Gluyas Series starting at 1400. Due to the South Island Young 88 championships changing date the programme for March has changed significantly. Again see the Newsletter for details.

Saturday February 1 – Saunders Robinson Brown Law Two Handed Series Race 3
Five Yachts took part in the third race of the Saunders Robinson Brown Law Two Handed series. Course 46 which basically is Green Point- Lushingtons and back twice was chosen given the nice SW breeze.
Meltdown quickly took the lead from Escapade then Future One and Hyperactive, who were fairly close together, and then Raging Hormones. This order was maintained throughout. Meltdown completed the course in 1.32.18, exactly 2 minutes ahead of Escapade. Future One and Hyperactive continued to battle closely with Future One prevailing by just 11 seconds and then Raging Hormones, who had made up much of her deficit, just over a further minute back. Handicaps will be very important in determining the corrected results and you can find these, and the series update, in the link below. Also keep in mind that in this series boats can discard their worst performance after 4 races have been completed (scheduled for March 22).
Huge thanks to our sponsor, Saunders Robinson Brown Law – I’m sure they will be happy to assist with your next protest hearing.
Sunday January 26 – Gluyas Motor Group Race 1
Seven yachts entered the first race in the Gluyas Motor Group Series. At the start there was a pleasant southerly and warm conditions and the start was very closely fought with Penzance first across. Whistler 3 lead around the first mark at Green point followed by Neferititi, Penzance and Meltdown then Raging Hormones, One Way and Future One. From there they sailed to Lushingtons and made an impressive sight as they crossed the harbour with spinnakers flying. It was a bit hazy in that part of the harbour but it appeared the order was pretty much the same except Meltdown had got ahead of Penzance. As they headed towards the Paua Farm there were clearly some quite different strategies in play.
When they came back in sight on the way to Childrens Bay for the first time Whistler 3 had a good lead over Neferititi, Meltdown, and Penzance then One Way, Raging Hormones and Future One. On the next leg to Green Point Meltdown managed to get ahead of Neferititi but otherwise the order remained the same to the finish. Whistler finished in 1.48.46 , 4 minutes ahead of Meltdown with Neferititi 42 seconds back then a further 34 seconds to Penzance. One Way was another 2.16 back 49 seconds ahead of Raging Hormones and Future One only 18 seconds back. As always the handicaps will be important in determining the corrected results and you can find these by clicking the link below.
Two races next weekend – on Saturday Race 3 of the two handed series starting at 1400 and then on Sunday the second race in the Gluyas series, a long harbour race, starting at 1300. The following week we are hosting the finish of the Wellington Akaroa Race – see the newsletter for details.
Thanks to our great sponsor – Gluyas Motor Group for all your motoring needs and well worth a trip to Ashburton.
Sunday January 19 – Akaroa Moorings Mark Foy Race 1
A fleet of 6 lined up for the first Mark Foy of the season. Carouser, the only Trailer Sailor, was the scratch boat starting at 1400. Future one was 7 minutes later and then Raging Hormones and Penzance a further minute later. Whistler 3 was off at 1411, 1 minute before Transition.
Course 5, a fairly long course, was chosen. The race initially went to the Kaik and then to Lushingtons. At this stage Whistler 3 had taken the lead ahead of Future One, Carouser, with the other 3 fairly close together a bit further back. From there they sailed to the Paua Farm and then to Tikao where Whistler 3 led from Transition, Future One, Raging Hormones, Penzance and Carouser. The rest of the race was Green Point, Childrens Bay and home.
Mark Foy races are designed to promote close finishes and this was very much the case. Transition and Whistler 3 had the closest finish we have had in quite a while with Whistler 3 taking the race by about one second. Future One was third ahead of Raging Hormones then Penzance and Carouser.
Many thanks to our sponsor, Akaroa Moorings, who provide a fantastic service to Akaroa boaties.
Sunday January 12 – myITmanager Coastal Series – Pompeys Race
Typical of our recent ‘summer’ weather it was cold and windy for the 5 boats & crews who raced
out & back to Pompeys Pillar. There was a good 15 knot southerly in the harbour then the usual
variable winds at the heads followed by a stronger 20-25 knot breeze from the south along the
coastline.
Future One had to withdraw from the race early after gear failure but the remaining 4 boats enjoyed
a good battle out the harbour with numerous changes in the lead. Whistler 3 were the first out to
heads and also to the Virtual mark, followed by Shibbeen , Meltdown and One Way.
It was not an easy day of racing. The swell was up to 3m with an additional chop of 1.5m and very
rough seas for the 4 Young 88’s. Everyone out there did very well just to hold on tight and cope with
the conditions. It was one of the roughest & bumpiest Pompeys Races of recent years. Quite an
experience for all!
On the way back from Pompeys Whistler 3 held onto their lead to be first home. One Way had a
good sail back from Pompeys to improve to second over the line, followed by Shibbeen and then
Meltdown. Full results and handicap results below.

Saturday January 11 – Saunders Robinson Brown Law Two Handed Series Race 2
It has not been the best of weather for holiday makers recently but despite this a good fleet of 6
boats turned up at the start. Typical of the recent weather it was cold with passing showers and 15 –
20 knots of breeze from the south.
A bit out of the ordinary was a down wind start which meant after a short run down to Childrens
Bays 4 boats were all lined up together at the first mark. The boats on the inside had right of way &
led the way. Whistler 3 was in the middle and ended up squeezed with nowhere to go & a bump to
the side of the boat. On the outside was Meltdown with no right of way and in the wrong leading to
a 720 degree penalty turn and a lot of catching up to do!
The boats then sailed to Lushingtons, Wainui & home. Hyperactive made the best of the windy
conditions & took out line honours. It was great to see Hamish & Rebecca, new to the fleet this year
in Escapade, home second with Whistler 3 third. Full results and handicap results below. Special
mention to be made of Shibbeen who were the only crew to fly a spinnaker during the race.
Once again thank you to our sponsors Saunders Robinson Brown Lawyers.

January 4 & 5 – Akaroa Dolphins Regatta
Sadly poor weather meant there was no racing either day. Hopefully this event will be rescheduled later in the year. Thanks to the Waghorn Family for their sponsorship of the Akaroa Dolphins series – their boats are less tied to the wind than our yachts and are always a great way to experience the harbour.
January 2 – NPD Akaroa Motor Garage Lady Skippers Race
A fleet of 3 yachts came to the line for the NPD Akaroa Motor Garage Lady Skippers race – Hyperactive (Pamela Bone), Escapade (Rebecca McGregor) and Raging Hormones (Fiona Lynch and Marg Drake). A shortish course, 48, was chosen which is Start – Green Point – Lushington – Green Point – Finish. Hyperactive won the start and built on this lead throughout. For much of the race Escapade and Raging Hormones were close but Raging Hormones got ahead on the 3rd leg. Sailing can be a cruel sport sometimes, Hyperactive crossed first in 1.06.19 in a steady breeze which then started to drop as Raging Hormones crossed 5 minutes later and then almost died away as Escapade finished almost 10 minutes later.
Congratulations to Pamela Bone, the new Champion Lady Skipper who will win the Josephine de Latour Rosebowl for this season.
Thanks to our sponsor – NPD Akaroa Motor Garage. Please support them for both your motoring and marine fuel needs (and if you are lucky enough to have a Super Gold Card they will give you a good discount).
January 1 2025 – Walker Architecture Heads Race
A fleet of 14 boats celebrated the new year and entered the annual Heads Race sponsored by Walker Architecture. The start was a little messy due to a hooter fault. With such a big fleet there were a range of strategies employed – some more effective than others. While there were steady southerlies at the jetty end of the harbour things were very unpredictable nearer the Heads and concentration was essential. There were several very tight finishes. Transition crossed the line first a mere 20 seconds ahead of Faast Forward then a further minute back to Hyperactive and another 2 minutes to Future One. Shibben was a further 7 seconds back then One Way, Meltdown, Penzance, Whistler 3, Escapade, Raging Hormones. Lightly Oiled and Leonardo did not finish. It is likelyt that handicaps will play a big part in the results on corrected time and click on the link below to find out.
AYC wishes to thank Jason Walker of Walder Architecture for his ongoing sponsorship of this race, the most prestigious of our season.
Sunday December 22 – Oborns Nautical Series Sprint Races and Overall results
Due to the hectic period in the lead up to Christmas only 3 yachts competed in the sprint races which concluded the Oborn’s Nautical Series. Course 48 was chosen for the first race. Whistler 3 led around the first mark at Green Point ahead of One Way and Transition. This order was maintained around the next mark at Lushintons as they crossed back to Green Point. Whistler 3 took the win in 53 minutes with One Way just over 3 minutes back and then Transition
A shorter course, 31 (start -Green Point -Childrens Bay twice and finish) was chosen for the second race. . Whistler 3 took an early lead ahead of Transition and then One Way and maintained this throughout winning in just over 38 minutes, a minute ahead of Transition with One Way less than a minute back. The same course was chosen for the third race and while the start was very close the pattern of the race was the same with Whistler 3 crossing first in 41.12 ahead of Transition and then One Way
As 5 races were sailed in the series each boat can discard its worst performance and handicaps are significant in this. Click the link below for the final results of the series.
Once again thanks to Oborn’s Nautical who are a great supporter of the club and of sailing generally.
On behalf of AYC I wish you all a happy and safe Christmas. AYC open day is Friday December 27 when everyone is invited to come and have a sail starting at 1pm. There is no racing next weekend but we look forward to New Years Day and the Walker Architecture Heads Race then, on Jan 2nd, the NPD Akaroa Motor Garage Lady Skippers race at noon. The cruising and social boating day, originally scheduled for Jan 2, has been rescheduled to Saturday Jan 4. The Akaroa Dolphins Regatta is on the first weekend of the new year starting at 1300 each day.
Oborn’s Nautical Series Sprint Races
Sunday December 15 – Oborn’s Nautical Series Race 3
After the disappointment of last week’s cancellation due to excessive winds a Fleet of 5 boats entered the long harbour race for the Oborn’s Series. It was great to welcome Nefertiti to the fleet. Course 15, which is 15.2 nautical miles, was chosen to make the most of a good noreasterly breeze. After a tight start Whistler 3 rounded the first mark at Childrens Bay in front and headed off to the next mark at Green Point. Meltdown was first around this mark ahead of Whistler 3, Nefertiti, One Way and Escapade. This order was maintained around the next mark at Lushingtons before the long leg to the Paua Farm. By the next mark, Tikao Bay, the fleet had spread and Whistler 3 was ahead of Meltdown, One Way, Escapade and Nefertiti and on the way back to the Paua Farm. When they came back into sight on the way to Childrens Bay the order remained the same. Whistler was first across the line in 2 hours, 12 minutes and 14 seconds, 5 minutes ahead of Meltdown with One Way another 3 minutes back and then Escapade and Nefertiti.
Next weekend the Oborn’s series concludes with 3 sprint races and a 1300 start. Provided all 3 races are sailed each boat will be able to discard her worst result so keep this in mind when looking at the series results in the link below.

Sunday December 1 – myITmanager Coastal Series – Peraki Race
A Fleet of 6 competed in our first offshore race of the season. Whistler 3 was first across the line in 4hours 46minutes 12 seconds. One Way was just less than 4 minutes later with a further 12 back to Penzance. Raging Hormones crossed 4th with Escapade less than a minute behind and Future One was 6th. Click the link for the full results which show just how crucial the handicaps can be.

Sunday November 24 – Oborns Nautical Series – Race 1
Six yachts came to the line for the first race in the Oborn’s Nautical Series and it was great to see Penzance on the water for the first time this season. The start towards Childrens Bay was tight although Meltdown had to go back across the line. Future One rounded the first mark ahead followed by Whistler 3, One Way, Meltdown, Raging Hormones and Penzance. From there they sailed to Lushingtons via Green Point and when they came into sight Whistler 3 led Meltdown then One Way, with Raging Hormones and Future One close together a bit further back ahead of Penzance. The course took them to the Kaik and then, as they came into sight on the way back to Lushingtons, Meltdown and Whistler 3 were having a real tussle for the lead with One Way a little further back ahead of the other 3.
Whistler 3 was first around the mark at Lushingtons and led Meltdown in the run to Green point with One Way next ahead of Raging Hormones and Future One and then Penzance. Meltdown rounded the mark at Green Point just ahead of Whistler 3 then One Way, Future One, who had overtaken Raging Hormones and then Penzance.
Meltdown crossed the line in 2hours 20minutes 7 seconds, 9 seconds ahead of Whistler 3. One Way was third across followed by Future One who was less then a minute ahead of Raging Hormones with Penzance 6th. With two close finishes handicaps will be significant and you can find these and the series points by clicking the link below.
Thanks to Oborn’s Nautical for sponsoring this series. Please remember this when making any decisions about your sailing purchases.
Next week is the first of our Coastal Races to Peraki. The race will start at noon and skippers will be sent special entry forms and Category 4 Safety Declaration forms by the secretary.
Oborn’s Nautical Series Race 1
Saturday November 23 – Saunders Robinson Brown Law Two Handed Series Race 1
Four Young 88s and one trailer-sailer (Carouser) lined up for the first two handed race of the season with a fresh Souwesterly and cooler weather. One Way (Keith Molloy and Sam Shuttleworth) took a different approach to the rest at the start which really paid off as they headed to the Kaik. One Way had some problems leading to the start and were a little late to get underway. When the Fleet reappeared on the way to Lushingtons for the first time Meltdown (Gil Smith and Bill McSweeney) were in the lead followed by Future One, Whistler 3 (Jamie and Chris Unsted) with Carouser (Bill Gaffaney and Max Pallet) and One Way (Mark Ochenden and Peter Zwart ) close together a bit further back. At Green Point, the next mark, the first 3 were in the same order and One Way had got ahead of Carouser.
The order remained unchanged as they sailed back to Lushingtons, Green point and home. Meltdown crossed the line first in 2hr 2min. Future One and Whistler 3 fought a close battle to the finish with Future One heading Whistler 3 by less than a boat length. One Way was fourth across the line with Carouser 5th. As the only Trailer-sailer competing against Young 88s this is a pretty impressive result for her. Click the link below for handicap results and series points.
Thank you to Saunders Robinson Brown Lawyers who sponsor this series.
Sunday November 17 – Black Cat Cruises Series Races 4, 5 & 6 – 3 Sprint Races
The first of the day’s 3 sprint races started at 1300. It was a tight start with Meltdown over the mark. Course 33 was chosen and One Way led around the first mark at Children’s Bay. From there they sailed to Green Point where One Way continued to lead. On the way back to Childrens Bay Meltdown was first around the mark followed by Raging Hormones and One Way who were very close and then Transition and Future One. The wind was very shifty on the way back to Green Point and at one point Future One took a different tack and sailed past most of the fleet. At the finish Raging Hormones took line honours 15 seconds ahead of Meltdown with Transition a further 32 seconds back and then another 30 seconds to One Way followed by Future One.
The second race was on the same course and we welcomed Hyperactive to the fleet, After a solid start she lead around the first mark. After sailing to Green Point they returned to Childrens Bay where Meltdown had a very narrow lead over Hyperactive with the other four close together. At the finish it was Meltdown ahead of Hyperactive, Transition, One Way, Raging Hormones and Future One. As this was the fifth race in the series each boat is allowed to drop their worst score which really evened up the series.
The final race was on Course 53. Again the start was to Childrens Bay where One Way led Meltdown around the mark followed by Future One, Hyperactive, Raging Hormones and Transition. From there the course went to Green Point and then Lushingtons, back to Green Point and home. Meltdown crossed first in 59.15 followed by Hyperactive (59.48), Transition (60.43), Future One (61.41), One Way (61.46) and Raging Hormones (62.11).
Given the close finishes in each of the 3 races handicaps are all important. To see the handicap results and the final series results please click the link below. Thank you to Black Cat Cruises for sponsoring this series. It was great to see their boats laden with passengers enjoying our wonderful harbour on a lovely day.
Next week we have the first Two Handed race on Saturday and the first race in our second series on Sunday both starting at 1400.

Sunday November 10 – Black Cat Cruises Series Race 3
A fleet of 5 lined up for the 3rd race in the Black Cat Cruises Series, which was the first long harbour race of the year, with fresh NE winds. A special course was chosen due to Mark 7 not being in the correct place (which limited the number of long courses available on the northerly list).
After a somewhat chaotic start with 2 boats over the line, Meltdown led around the first mark at Childrens Bay. She maintained this lead ahead of One Way and Transition then Raging Hormones and Future One, who were sailing two handed, to Green Point. The next mark was mark 4, Robinsons Bay, which is out of sight from the start box, and Meltdown was still in the lead when they emerged back into sight. One Way was next then Raging Hormones and Transition who actually passed Raging Hormones on the way to Tikau. From there it was back to Robinsons Bay and once more out of sight. When they once again emerged Meltdown led from One Way, Transition, Raging Hormones and then Future One. As they headed across the harbour to the Kaik One Way caught and passed Meltdown before the fleet once again went out of sight.
One Way was first across the line in just under 2 ½ hours with Meltdown 4 ½ minutes later and then Transition just over another 2 minutes later followed by Raging Hormones and then Future One. Click the link below for the handicap Results and the series to date. Next weekend this series wraps up with 3 Sprint Races and, as there is a drop available after 5 or more races have been completed it is still anyone’s game. Also don’t forget the Annual Golf Tournament next Saturday 16th.
Thanks as always to our sponsor Black Cat Cruises.
Sunday November 3 – Black Cat Cruises Series Race 2
A Fleet of 4 Young 88s lined up for the second race of the season. A special course (67) was chosen, to take advantage of the steady sou-westerly wind, going from the start to the Kaik, to Childrens Bay, to Green Point and back to Childrens Bay and then finish.
As the race proceeded Whistler 3 built and maintained a lead over One Way and Raging Hormones who had a real tussle with the order changing several times. Future One was a little further back and a dying wind near the end of the race affected them badly.
Whistler 3 finished first, almost 2 minutes ahead of One Way, with Raging Hormones a further half minute back. Future One was hampered by the dying wind. The full results including corrected times (the handicapper has done a pretty good job) and series score can be found on the link below.
We acknowledge our sponsor, Black Cat Cruises. It’s great to share the harbour with you. Next week the third race in the series will be a long harbour race starting at 1300.

Sunday October 27 – Season 2024/25 Opening Day – Black Cat Series Race 1
A fleet of 7 boats took part in the traditional opening day sailpast; Transition, Future One, One Way. Raging Hormones, Whistler 3, Escapade and Meltdown. The start was delayed by 20 minutes due to insufficient wind. The fleet headed to Green Point and then on to French Farm where Transition rounded the mark in front. From there they returned to mark 1 with Transition first ahead of Meltdown, One Way, Whistler 3 and Raging Hormones (all close together) then Future One and Escapade. They returned to French Farm in a similar order and then to Green Point and home. Transition crossed the line in 1 hour 58 minutes, about 6 minutes ahead of Meltdown with One Way a further 25 seconds back, then Whistler 3 and Raging Hormones. Unfortunately the wind dropped away resulting in a very slow trip home for Future One while Escapade did not finish within the time limit. Handicap results and series points are on the attached file. Thank you to our series sponsor – Black Cat Cruises – if you are not lucky enough to be on a Yacht they are a great way to experience the harbour. The next race in the series is next Sunday at 1400.
Saturday June 1 – Akaroa Butchery and Deli Winter Series Race 5
After the disappointment of last weeks abandonment due to high winds it was great to find a lovely northerly day with unseasonably warm weather. Eight boats came to the start-line with One Way making the best start. From there the fleet went to Childrens Bay where wind shifts led to some interesting sailing. The fleet then went to Green Point, Robinsons Bay, Lushingtons, Robinsons Bay again and when they emerged back in sight from the jetty on the way back to Green Point, Transition had a handy lead over five other boats. Transition was first across the line in 1 hr 42 minutes followed 5 minutes later by Lightly Oiled who were 20 seconds ahead of One Way with Whistler 3 a further minute back and then 90 seconds later Raging Hormones. Meltdown, Penzance and Transition made up the rest of the fleet. With finished so close handicaps come into play for both the race placings and the overall series results. click the link below to see them. Thanks again to our series sponsor – Akaroa Butchery and Deli. They provide wonderful support to the club and they have a great range of fantastic products. A recommendation from the start box is their bacon bones which make the most delicious soup stocks. As this is the last race for the season we wish you all a happy winter and hope to see you at the AGM (11 am) and Prizegiving (6 pm) tomorrow, June 2.
Sunday May 19 – Akaroa Butchery and Deli Winter Series Race 3
The race started at about 1420 following the rescheduled Lady Skippers race on a chilly, NE day (it is the winter series). The course was similar to the Lady Skippers race with a bit extra at the end (although this was not what happened as dying winds resulted in a shortened course). One question was whether the change back to the normal skippers would change the performance of the yachts. To find out click the link below. Next Sunday is race 4 in this series with the final race the following SATURDAY June 1 both starting at 1300. On Sunday June 2 our AGM will be at 11am with prizegiving that evening from 6pm. Thank you to our sponsor Akaroa Butchery and Deli. I have been instructed (by a committee member) to tell you about how good their lasagna is – I thought I needed to check before I put it on the website and can report that he was 100% correct.
Sunday May 19 – NPD Akaroa Motor Garage Lady Skippers Race
The rescheduled Lady Skippers Race was the first of two races on May 19 and fortunately the wind arrived just in time for the 6 Yachts noon start. After a cautious start the fleet headed to Childrens Bay then Greenpoint, Lushingtons, the Kaik and home. First across the line was Transition skippered by defending champion Fiona Lynch followed by Whistler 3 (Nicki Wheaton), One Way (Jacqui Richardson), Raging Hormones (Ali Booth) and Penzance (Wendy Risedon). Escapade (R. McIntyre) did not finish. A highlight of the results ceremony was the presentation of the Josephene De Latour Rosebowl to Fiona Lynch by Club Patron, Paul de Latour, who entertained with his reminiscences of the reasons behind this trophy. For the handicap results and times click the link below. Thank you to NPD Akaroa Motor Garage for supporting this race.
Sunday May 12 – Akaroa Butchery and Deli Winter Series – Race 2
A fleet of six Yachts came to the start for the second race in the Winter Series and we were thrilled to welcome a newcomer – Sneaky Heat. A special course was chosen (basically course 6 with a detour to Mark 2 prior to the end) and, following an orderly start, they headed off to the Kaik. When they come back into sight off Wainui Transition was leading Whistler 3 and Meltdown but by the Mark at Tikau Bay Whistler had caught Transition as they headed off to the Paua Farm. Shortly after this the wind began to drop and the call was made to shorten the Course – Lusingtons and then home. By 4pm Whistler 3 had rounded the mark at Lushingtons and the wind died. At 5 pm the 4 hour limit expired and the race was abandoned even though the finishing line was tantalisingly close for the first two boats. Next week we have 2 races on Sunday – the rescheduled Lady Skippers race at 1200 followed by race 3 of the Winter Series. Hopefully there will be more wind. Thank you to Akaroa Butchery and Deli our sponsors. I had sausage and mash featuring their lamb sausages this week and they were delicious – you need to try them.

Sunday April 17 – Bayleys Real Estate Series Sprint Races
Yet another gorgeous autumn day on the harbour. As these were sprint races all 3 were between the start/finish, Green Point and Childrens Bay with the direction determined by the wind. A fleet of 6 arrived at the start but unfortunately the wind did not. After 30 minutes a gentle southerly arrived so the starboard course was chosen. Towards the end of the race the wind started going round to the nor-east. Finishing order was Meltdown, Transition, One Way, Raging Hormones, Whistler 3 and Penzance. The handicap results were incredibly close with the first 5 boats separated by less than a minute. The remaining two races were sailed on port. The second race was won by Whistler form One Way, Raging Hormones, Transition, Meltdown and Penzance. The final race was a genuine sprint and featured a well contested start with both One Way and Transition over the line at the gun. In such a short race this was significant. First across the line in just under 22 minutes was Whistler 3 then Raging Hormones, Meltdown, One Way, Transition and Penzance. Click the link below to see the handicap results as well as the overall series results where the ability to discard the worst performance was important, Whilethere was a clear series winner the next tow places were determined on a courtback of the most wins. Next week we host the Akaroa Motor Garage Lady Skippers race starting at 1300. We were pleased to welcome our sponsor, Chris Mangels of Bayleys Real Estate who was able to drop in. He and his team do a fantastic job and we urge all members to support them.
Sunday April 14 – Bayleys Real Estate Series Race 3
A fleet of 7 came to the start on a lovely autumnal afternoon with light southerlies. Transition won the start and they headed off to the Kaik, then Tikau, the Paua Farm, Lushingtons, Green Point, Childrens Bay and home. Whistler 3 crossed first followed by Transition, One Way, Meltdown, Raging Hormones, Lightly Oiled and Penzance. Handicaps are proving very significant in this series as you will see if you click on the link below. Next week the series concludes with 3 Sprint Races and, as the boats can discard their worst performance after 5 races have been sailed, there is still all to play for. A huge thank you to Bayleys for their ongoing sponsorship of the club.
Saturday April 13 – Saunders Robinson Brown Two Handed Series Race 5
Abandonded.
Sunday April 7 – Bayleys Real Estate Series Race 2
A fleet of 7 lined up in ideal conditions for the second race in the Bayleys Real Estate Series. It was great to see Penzance and Lightly Oiled for the first time in a while. Course 20 was chosen and the start was clearly won by One Way who also led around the Childrens Bay and Green Point Marks. From there the fleet headed to French Farm taking very different strategies and the bulk of the race was on that side of the harbour going on to Tikao and then Robinsons Bay before returning home via Green Point. Whistler was first across the line followed, half a minute later by One Way then a further 50 seconds back to Transition and another minute to Meltdown. Raging Hormones was next then Lightly Oiled and Penzance. For full results click the link below. We are very grateful to Bayleys Real Estate for their sponsorship of this series. Next Saturday we have the final in the two handed series starting at 1300 and the next race in the Bayleys Series starting 1300 on Sunday.
Sunday March 31 – Brownies Mattress Direct Easter Regatta Day 2
It was great to see an additional two yachts, Afterglow and Hyperactive, at the start today. As the winds were very light the race officers chose two shorter courses for the races today. The first was simply to the Kaik and back and took over an hour. Meltdown crossed the line first ahead of One Way, Raging Hormones and Afterglow (who fought an epic battle at the finish with Raging Hormones pipping Afterglow by 3 seconds), Hyperactive and Transition. The second race took the fleet to Green Point then Childrens Bay twice and it was great to see a large crowd watching from the lighthouse (and there were even some cheers!). Once again Meltdown and One Way crossed the line first and second followed by Transition, Raging Hormones, Afterglow and Hyperactive. Handicaps were significant in the overall results which can be found at the link below. Many thanks to Dean and the crew at Brownies Mattress Direct for their great sponsorship. Please respond by supporting them. Next week the Bayleys Series resumes with race 2 starting at 1300. Don’t forget daylight savings ends on Sunday morning.
Brownies Mattress Direct Day 2
Saturday March 30 – Brownies Mattress Direct Easter Regatta – Day 1
Four boats came to the start for the first day of the Brownies Mattress Direct Easter Regatta which was sailed in chilly lightish southerly weather. At the start Raging Hormones had a very different strategy which paid off really big time. The course took the fleet to the Kaik, and Childrens Bay twice and by the second last Mark Transition led from Meltdown with One Way and Raging Hormones battling fiercely. Transition was first across the line about a minute ahead of Meltdown. The other two fought to the end with Raging Hormones 4 seconds ahead of One Way (less than a boat length). The handicap results are very interesting. The wind was dropping so a shorter course was chosen for the second race. Transition won the start and led around the Green Point and Lushingtons marks with the other 3 close together. All 4 took different routes back across the harbour which saw Meltdown cross first, 40 seconds ahead of Transition with Raging Hormones a further 45 seconds back and then a minute to One Way. Again the handicap results are super close and you can find all the results by clicking the link below, Day 2 of the Regatta sees a further two races tomorrow starting at 1300. Prizegiving will follow the racing (probably about 1800) and there will be a bbq which will cost $10. Huge thanks to Dean and the whole Brownies Team. They are incredibly supportive and generous to the club. They offer great discounts to AYC members so be sure to remember them whenever you need new bedding (I’m told they can even do ones for your yachts).
Sunday March 17 – Bayleys Real Estate Series Race 1
Only 3 boats lined up for the St Patrick’s Day race, the first race in the Bayleys Real Estate series. There was quite a tussle at the start but after the first mark at Green Point Transition led Meltdown and Whistler 3. This order continued until the very last mark when Meltdown passed Transition. For the full results click the link below. Thanks to Bayleys Real Estate for sponsoring the event -If you are looking to sell or buy please consider their services. No sailing at Akaroa next weekend but the club will be open from 2pm on Sunday for a Watch Party – see the newsletter for full details. The following weekend is Easter so the Brownies Mattress Direct Easter Regatta will be on Saturday and Sunday with racing starting at 1300 each day. Again the newsletter will have full details including the arrangements and costs for the prizegiving function on Sunday evening.
Saturday March 16 – Saunders Rgiving obinson Brown Lawyers Two Handed Series Race 4
A Fleet of 4 yachts lined up for Race 4 of the two handed Series – Meltdown, One Way, Carouser (having her first start of the season in this series) and newcomer Sneaky Heat. The only thing missing was wind. After about 30 minutes it was deemed that there was enough to start on Course 46 (although it died away just as the hooter went making for a very slow start). Meltdown and One Way built up a lead on the legs to Green Point and then Lushingtons until the call to shorten course came( meaning the boats simply came back to Green Point and then home). Meltdown was first over the mark followed by One Way. Shortly after that the wind died altogether and Carouser and Sneaky Heat decided to withdraw. As 4 races have now been completed in this series a drop is available which makes for interesting overall results so far – which you can find by clicking the link below. Thanks to our sponsors, Saunders Robinson Brown Lawyers. The remaining race in this series is scheduled for Saturday 13 April starting at 1300.
Sunday 10 March – My IT Manager Mark Foy Series Race 2
Unfortunately only 2 boats were able to sail in this race but as it was a lovely sailing day a “social” race was held under Mark Foy Conditions. Raging Hormones was the scratch boat and Whistler 3 started 2 minutes later. At the finish Raging Hormones won by just over one and a half minutes. Thank you to My IT Manager for sponsoring the series .

Sunday January 7 2024 – Akaroa Dolphins Regatta – Day 2
A perfect sailing day for the second day of the regatta – sunny, warm and a brisk SW wind. The same fleet arrived (although there were some additions to the crews). The first race was on Course 46 (start, Green Point, Lusingtons, Green Point, Lushingtons Green Point and finish). Transition led around the first mark and built on this throughout the race. Unfortunately, she went around one of the marks the wrong way so was recorded as DNF. One Way was therefore the first across the line followed 4 minutes later by Meltdown then another 7 seconds to Shibbeen and then Raging Hormones and Whistler 3. The second race used the same course as race 2 yesterday but without the drama at the end. Transition crossed the line first with One Way less than a minute behind and a further minute back to Shibben then Meltdown, Raging Hormones and Whistler 3. As ever handicaps make a huge difference so click below for the full results and series points. Once again thank you to the Waghorn Family and Akaroa Dolphins for sponsoring the series. If you are not lucky enough to be on a yacht they are the best way to enjoy our wonderful harbour. Next week we have the second twilight race starting at 1700 on Wednesday, the second two handed race at 1400 on Saturday and the Pompeys Coastal Race on Sunday with a noon start.
Saturday January 6 2024 – Akaroa Dolphins Regatta – Day 1
A fleet of 6 lined up for the first two races of the Akaroa Dolphins Regatta. Race 1 was a short one from the start to Green Point , Lushingtons and back. One Way led the whole way followed by Transition, Meltdown, Shibben, Whistler 3 and Aging Hormones. Race 2 was longer – start to the Kaik, Childrens Bay, back to the Kaik, Childrens Bay and home. On the final leg the fleet ran out of wind as they passed red point and there were all sorts of changes and challenges as they tried to round mark 2. Shibbeen led around the mark followed by Raging Hormones, Whilstler then the rest. Shortly after the fleet rounded the mark the wind swung round from SW to NE and One Way and Transition who had taken a line much closer to the main wharf took the lead and fought a close battle to the end with One Way winning by less than a boat length. Shibbeen, Whistler 3 and Meltdown were even closer together with less than 20 seconds separating them. Day 2 of the Regatta is tomorrow starting at 1300. Thank you to Akaroa Dolphins for sponsoring the regatta. They even managed to organise a pod of dolphins to come to the jetty just prior to the end of the second race. Click below fot the handicap and series results to date.
Monday January 1 2024 – Walker Architecture Heads Race
What a wonderful day to go sailing. A fleet of 13 Yachts lined up for our premiere even,t the Walker Architecture Heads Race for the Guthrey Trophy. We welcomed 4 Lyttleton boats: Shibbeen, Calculator, Leonardo and Nephrititi and two occasional locals, Faarst Forward and Roaring Meg to join our regular fleet. With so many boats the start was a tad crowded as they headed off with a nice southerly harbour draft. This wind kept up for most of the race (although the last finishers found it dying on them) and the boats reached the Heads Mark in under 90 minutes. They looked very impressiv ecoming back up the harbour with spinnakers flying and the first 4 fairly close together. Transition was first across the line followed by Meltdown, Shibbeen and One Way. However handicaps are all important. For the full results click the link below. Next weekend we have the Akaroa Dolphins Regatta on Saturday and Sunday starting at 1300 each day. Thank you to Jason Walker of Walker Architectue for sponsoring the race. Whether its your mansion of your boatshed they can design the ideal building for you.
Walker Architecture Heads Race
Sunday 17 December – Oborn’s Nautical Series – Sprint Races
With the lead up to Christmas the fleet for the final day of the Oborn’s series was only 4 yachts. Prior to the scheduled start the winds were very light but 2 or 3 minutes before the sequence started the wind arrived. The first race of the day was on a very short course – start to Green Point to Lushingtons, Green Point and finish. Unfortunately, shortly after the start the wind started to drop and, at times, died away completely. Transition led around the first mark followed by One Way and Whistler 3 with Meltdown significantly behind. The order stayed like this around the Lushington mark and heading back towards Green Point. Transition was first around the final mark but fickle winds saw the 3 Young 88s bunch together and Meltdown passed the other two, finishing second ahead of One Way and Whistler 3. Transition’s winning time was 1 hr 31 min for a course that would normally take 25 – 40 minutes and as there was no sign of any further wind arriving the other 2 races were abandoned. Click the link below to see what this means for the handicap results and overall series standings. Huge thanks to Oborn’s Nautical for their ongoing support. There is no racing next weekend for Christmas. The Junior Race day is scheduled for December 28 and hopefully a good number of boats will be available for this event. The Heads Race will be held on Monday January 1 starting at 1300.
Oborn’s Nautical Series Race 4
Sunday 10 December – Oborn’s Nautical Series Race 3 – Long Harbour Race
After the disappointment of last week’s cancellation due to excessive winds a fleet of 6 came to the start with a steady, if chilly, souwesterly. Course 67 was called – this was a special course to fit the long harbour race given an uncertain forecast. This took the fleet to the Kaik and Lushingtons twice and then back to the Kaik, Childrens Bay and home (which did mean that for most of the race we could not see them from the jetty). Meltdown won the start which saw a couple of boats doing penalty turns. By mark 3 Transition had built a good lead over Meltdown followed by One Way, Whistler 3, Raging Hormones and Penzance. This order remained after the next two legs. When they came back into sight on the way to Childrens Bay Transition had maintained her lead over Meltdown and One Way had made some ground while Raging Hormones had almost caught up with her, well ahead of Whistler 3 and Penzance. This was the order across the line but again handicaps might have an effect. Click the link below for the full results and series update. Next week the series wraps up with 3 sprint races starting at 1300 and with the possibility of a drop anything could happen. Once again Thanks to Oborn’s Nautical for supporting the club and we recommend that all members support them in return.
Oborn’s Nautical Series Race 3
Sunday 26 November – Oborn’s Nautical Series Race 2
Another gorgeous sailing day with steady winds from the southerly quarter. Six Boats came to the startline but unfortunately, just prior to the start, Afterglow suffered a major glitch which left her without a functional mainsheet and while they gamely tried to continue they were eventually forced to withdraw. Transition led around the first mark at Green Point ahead of Meltdown with the other 3 Young 88;, Whistler 3, One Way and Raging Hormones, quite tightly bunched. This continued to Lushingtons and then the gaps grew as the fleet headed off to the Paua Farm. When they came back into sight, on the way back to Lushingtons, Transition had established a solid lead over Meltdown with Whistler 3 in a clear 3rd and Raging Hormones just ahead of One Way. As they approached the finish One Way got past Raging Hormones but the question was would this be reflected in the corrected results when the handicaps were applied. To find out click the link below and you will also find the series update. Thank you to Oborn’s Nautical for their sponsorship of this series. Next week is the Peraki race, the first of our Coastal races, with a 1200 noon start.

Sunday 19 November – Oborn’s Nautical Series Race 1
A fleet of 7 Yachts came to the start on a lovely late spring day with steady winds from the south. It was great to see Penzance back for her first start of the season. The course chosen was course 10 which sees the fleet go to Green Point, Lushingtons. the Paua Farm, Childrens Bay. Green Point and back to Childrens Bay and then Finish. Meltdown led around the first mark followed by Transition and then the rest of the fleet. These two maintained this lead throughout the race. When the fleet came back into view from the Paua Farm mark Transition and then Meltdown led from Penzance, Raging Hormones, One Way, Whistler 3 and Afterglow and this order remained to the finish. Click the link below for the full results including actual and corrected times. Next week the Saunders Robinson Brown Two Handed Series begins at 1400 on Saturday 25th and the second race in the Oborn’s Nautical Series is at 1400 on Sunday 26th. Sunday 29 October – Black Cat Cruises Series Race 2
While it may not have been the best day for NZ Rugby it was a great day for sailing with a steady wind in the northerly quarter. Only 3 yachts came to the start – Meltdown, Raging Hormones and Whistler 3 and Course 20 was chosen – Start to Children’s Bay. Green Point. French Farm. Tikao, Robinsons Bay, Green Point and Home. Meltdown led around the first mark and maintained this lead throughout. With the good breeze she completed the course in 1 hour and 33 minutes, 4 minutes ahead of Raging Hormones with Whistler 3 crossing the line third. For the full results click the link below. Next weekend we have the first long harbour race of the season with a 1300 start. A big thanks to our sponsor, Black Cat Cruises who provide a great way to enjoy our wonderful harbour (almost as good as sailing).

Yet another non-wintery day for the last race of the Winter Series, at the start of King’s Birthday Weekend, saw a fleet of 3 yachts come to the start. After an even start Meltdown led around the first mark at Green Point and off to Lushingtons. When they came back in sight after Mark 3 Transition had taken the lead from Meltdown with Future One third and this order remained as they sailed off to Mark 7, the Paua Farm. From there the fleet sailed back to Childrens Bay, Green Point, Childrens Bay and then home. Transition crossed the line first ahead of Meltdown and Future One. This is the last race of the season. For the full results and overall results of the series please click the link below. Once again thank you to Fred and all at Akaroa Butchery and Deli for your support – it is greatly appreciated as are all our sponsors throughout the season. Tomorrow we have our AGM at 11 am and the prize-giving from 6 pm.
Akaroa Butchery and Deli Winter Series Final Race
Sunday 28 May – Akaroa Butchery and Deli Winter Series Races 3 & 4
A lovely mild autumn day was on hand for the second last racing day of the season. Four yachts left the start-line and headed to Green Point. On the next leg to Lushingtons, Transition led Meltdown, Future One and One Way. This was maintained on the leg back to Green Point with Transition extending her lead finally crossing the line about 3 minutes ahead of Meltdown with Future One a further 3 minutes back. Unfortunately for One Way the wind died to almost nothing before they crossed the line. One Way was very much a family affair today with Jacqui and Timmy Richardson taking George and the whole Foster family (our sponsors) out for the race, and, with 4 young children aboard, withdrew from the second race to avoid a possible mutiny. After waiting more than half an hour some wind finally arrived and the shortest sprint course in the book (start – Childrens Bay – Green Point – finish) was chosen. Again Transition was first across the line, followed by Meltdown and then Future One. Handicaps came into play today and, as 4 races have now been completed in the series, each boat can discard its worst performance. This had some interesting effects and the final race of the series, to be sailed next SATURDAY starting at 1300 will be crucial. Click the link below for the full results. ALL members are invited to the AGM next Sunday at 1100 and the Prizegiving at 1800, both in the clubrooms. A big thanks to our sponsor Akaroa Butchery and Deli. It was great to have you out on the water with us today
Akaroa Butchery and Deli Winter Series Races 3 & 4
Sunday 21 May – Akaroa Butchery and Deli Winter Series Races 1 & 2
Finally, after 2 very frustrating weeks, enough wind to race and the race committee decided to have two races today to start making up for those we missed. Four boats lined up for the first race which was a short course between Green Point and Childrens Bay twice. This was quite close with Meltdown finishing first followed by Transition less than a minute later with Future One a further 2 minutes back and then One Way. The second race went to the Kaik, Lushingtons, Green Point and home. Much of this course cannot be seen from the start box but when the fleet came back in sight in dying winds there were several changes in placing as the boats found and/or lost the wind. The finishing order was the same as the previous race although Meltdown’s winning margin was considerably greater as she crossed the line just as the wind dropped further slowing the others. For full results including the handicap results and series points click the link below. Many thanks to our wonderful sponsors Akaroa Butchery and Deli who also supply our raffle prizes which are much sought after.
Akaroa Butchery and Deli Winter Series Races 1 & 2
Sunday 7 May – Akaroa Butchery and Deli Winter Series Race 1
Future One, Meltdown, One Way and Transition arrived at the start line but unfortunately the wind did not. Unfortunately this meant the race was abandoned after an hour and a half.
Sunday 30 April: Lady Skippers Race
Four boats entered the annual Lady Skippers Race. The wind was light and the conditions were a bit hazy. Course 2 was chosen and, after a close fought start, the fleet soon spread out. First across the finish line was Transition, skippered by Fiona Lynch, followed by Future One skippered by Brooke Molloy, One Way skippered by Jacqui Richardson and finally Carouser skippered by Alison Evans (as the only Trailor Yacht in the field they can be proud of this result). Click below to find the handicap results. Next week sees the start of the Akaroa Butchery and Deli Winter Series. Keep Sunday June 4 clear for the AGM and Prizegiving.
Sunday 23 April: Bayleys Real Estate Series Sprint Races and Overall Results.
Due to light winds only 2 of the 3 scheduled races were sailed. However this was enough to trigger a drop in the series scoring. Click below for full results. Next week is the Lady Skippers race starting at 1300. Thanks to BAyley’s Real Estate for sponsoring this series.

Sunday April 9 – Brownies Mattress Direct Easter Regatta 2023 – Races 3 & 4
Five boats lined up for the second day of Racing in the Brownies Mattress Direct Easter Regatta. The start was delayed almost an hour as the nor-easterly was gusting over the limit of 30 knots at the scheduled start time. The first race was on course 35 (basically Green Point to Lushingtons and back twice). Meltdown was first across the line followed by Transition, Future One, Afterglow and Hyperactive. The second race used course 62 (the same course with an extra leg). This was an exciting race with lots of changes of lead and lots of action. I am sure the newsletter will have some good stories to share. Hyperactive, with a crew of only 2 and without using a kite, won this race 12 seconds ahead of Meltdown (who had a VERY exciting time), followed closely by Future One, Transition and Afterglow. Again, with a close finish, handicap ratings came in to play so click the link below to see all the results and the overall placings. There is no racing next weekend and the final day of the Bayleys Series, which will be 3 sprint races with the first starting at 1300, the following Sunday (April 23). The regatta prizegiving is always one of the highlights of the club year thanks to the generosity of our sponsor, Brownies Mattress Direct. Please support them when you are furnishing your house or bach (and I’m told they can provide suitable bedding for every type of yacht).
Brownies Mattress Direct Easter Regatta 2023 Races 3 & 4
Saturday April 8 – Brownies Mattress Direct Easter Regatta 2023 – Races 1 & 2
The first two races in the Easter Regatta were sailed in brisk, chilly nor-easterlies. A fleet of 6 competed and the first race was a fairly short one using course 39. Transition was first, followed by Meltdown, Hyperactive, Afterglow, One Way and then Future One. The second race was longer on course 23 with two runs to the Kaik. The finishing order was Transition, Meltdown, Hyperactive, Afterglow, Future One and One Way. The finishes were tight in both races so handicap ratings really came into play. To see what effect these had click the link below. Series points are very tight so tommorow’s two races will be crucial. Thanks to Dean and the team at Brownies Direct Mattresses for your ongoing support. It is very much appreciated and club members should recognise this whenever buying bedding.

Sunday April 2 – Bayley’s Real Estate Series Race 3 – Long Harbour Race
Five boats arrived at the start line in very light NE conditions and after a 30 minute wait sufficient wind arrived for a start using Course 6 with a downwind start off to the Kaik. On the next leg back to Lushingtons the wind dropped for most of the fleet with only Future One finding breeze and sailing past the whole fleet and around the mark. It was very much a race of two halves as a brisk SW came in during the leg to the Salmon Farm. Transition withdrew and Meltdown led around Mark 1 on the way back to the Kaik. The fleet arrived home fairly closely together with Meltdown first across the line in 2.22.23; 22 seconds ahead of One Way with Lightly Oiled a further 32 seconds back and Future One less than 2 minutes later. This close finish brings handicap ratings into play and click the link below to find the full results. Next weekend is Easter and we will once again host the Brownies Mattress Direct Easter Regatta on Saturday and Sunday with racing starting at 1300 each day. Thank you to Bayley’s Real Estate for their sponsorship of today’s race – it is always appreciated.

Sunday March 26 – Bayley’s Real Estate Series Race 2
Six yachts came to the start with a nice Souwesterly breeze. Transition won the start but Meltdown was first around Mark 1 at Green Point and then round the Lushingtons bouy. From there the fleet sailed off to the Kaik (and out of sight from the start box). When they came back into sight on their way back to Lushingtons the wind was dying and the call was made to “Shorten Course – Mark 3 and home 1S”. At this point Meltdown was leading from Transition and Lightly Oiled with Afterglow next and the remaining two boats, One Way and Future One, not yet in sight. Transition managed to overtake Meltdown winning by 90 seconds. Lightly Oiled was a further 2 minutes back then Afterglow, One Way and Future One. Handicap ratings are all important in such a close finish so click the link to see the corrected results and series update. Next week is the 3rd race in the Bayley’s series, a Long Harbour Race starting at 1300. Don’t forget daylight savings ends on Sunday. Thanks to our Sponsors, Bayley’s Real Estate, who are great supporters of sailing in Akaroa.

Two Handed Series Final Results
Sunday March 12 – Bayleys Real Estate Series Race 1 (provisional results)
A Fleet of 5 lined up for the first race in the Bayleys Real Estate Series on a gorgeous late summer day. Course 61 was chosen and the fleet headed off to the Kaik. When they came back in view from the start box Meltdown had built up a big lead on the leg to Lushingtons. One Way and Transition were battling each other and Future One and Penzance were also having their own battle. At this point the wind started to drop and became very flukey and the call to Shorten Course was made so the race was shortened to Green Point and then home. During the leg to Green Point Meltdown fell into a hole and the rest of the fleet caught and even passed her so the race effectively became a (very slow) sprint to the finish. Meltdown was first across the line followed 37 seconds later by One Way, Transition was a further 25 seconds back, another 31 seconds ahead of Future One closely followed by Penzance. With this close finish handicaps are all important in determining the results and to find out what happened click the link below. However be aware that these results are provisional subect to the outcomes of two protests. Thank you to our sponsors, Bayleys Real Estate.

February 19 – Gluyas Motor Group Series Races 4, 5 & 6 – sprint races
A fleet of 5 yachts lined up for the 3 sprint races to complete the Gluyas Motor Group Series. There was a short delay to the start of the first race as the wind was a little late arriving. This race was between Green Point and Childrens Bay (twice) and the fleet was well spaced behind Lightly Oiled until the final Mark at Childrens Bay when they sailed into a hole and both Meltdown and Transition sailed past with One Way and Future One having a close battle for the remaining places. Race 2 saw the fleet going to Green Point, Lushingtons , back to Green Point and finish. Lightly Oiled led from the start followed by Meltdown, Transition, One Way and Future One. The final race went to Tikau and back and again Lightly Oiled led from the start this time followed by Transition, One Way , Meltdown and Future One. When the final results for the series were tabulated the leading two were tied on points and a countback was used to determine the winner (3 firsts to 2). To find out who finally won click the link below. Next week some of the fleet will head to Naval Point for the Young 88 Owners Championships and we wish them all the best. The rest of the fleet will compete in our first Mark Foy race of the season. Thanks to Gluyas Motors of Ashburton for their great support.

February 12 – Gluyas Motor Group Series Race 3 – Long Harbour Race
Course 25, which is 14.5 nm, was chosen for this race sailed in nice noreasterly conditions. This course is Childrens Bay, Green Point to Robinsons Bay, Tikau, Robinsons Bay again and then to the Paua Farm and home. A fleet of six lined up and Meltdown led round the first mark after a very competitive start. They maintained that lead thorough the first few legs but were overtaken by Transition who held on for the rest of the race. As the vast majority of the race was on the far side of the harbour I will leave it to the newsletter writers to describe what happened. Click on the link below for the full results and series update. Next week we will have the 3 sprint races to complete the series. As there is a “drop to come” the series is still wide open. The first of the races will start at 1300. We acknowledge the wonderful support of our sponsor, Gluyas Motor Group of Ashburton. When its time to replace your vehicle please keep them in mind.
Gluyas Motor Group Series Race 3
February 5 – Gluyas Motor Group Series Race 2
Four Yachts lined up for the start in strong gusty noreasterlies, extreme heat and quite choppy seas (for Akaroa Harbour). Fortunately the wind dropped a little after a while and some rain lowered the temperature. Meltdown won an exciting and eventful start but was soon overtaken by Lightly Oiled who built their lead round the first few marks but unfortunately had to withdraw. Meltdown took over the lead which they then held throughout finally winning in just a tad over 2 hours as the wind died. One Way was second and Future One third. I’m sure the newsletter will have some good stories about the first 2/3 of the race. Thanks to Gluyas Motor Group of Ashburton for their continuing sponsorship. Click below for the full results.

January 15 – Grand Hotel Coastal Series – Pompey’s Pillar Race
An intrepid fleet of 4 Yachts lined up for our second coastal race of the season. After a still morning the nor-easterly arrived just in time for the noon start. Shibeen led away with the rest of the fleet, Penzance, Meltdown and One Way close across the start. First across the line, 4 hours and 54 minutes later was Penzance followed 2 minutes later by Meltdown, One Way a further minute back and Shibbeen just 2 minutes later. For full results including the overall series result click on the link below. The club thanks Ben and his team at the Grand Hotel for their ongoing sponsorship. The Grand is a great place for a drink, a meal, fantastic music and a generally great time (almost as good as sailing).
January 14 – Saunders Robinson Brown Law Two Handed Series Race 2
A fleet of 5 yachts lined up for the second race in the two handed series – 4 Young 88s, Meltdown, Hyperactive, One Way and Shibbeen (who are visiting from Naval Point) and Carouser, a trailer-sailer with the crew who had sailed Armalite in the first race of the series. There was a steady wind from the southwest and the course was essentially twice between Green Point and Lushingtons. Meltdown established an early lead which she maintained throughout. Shibbeen and One Way battled throughout with One Way just ahead on the line. Hyperactive was next and Carouser finished only 12 minutes later which was a very good result. Click the link below for the full results and series update. The club is very grateful to our sponsor, Saunders Robinson Brown Law.

January 1 2023 – Walker Architecture Heads Race for the Guthrey Plate
A fantastic field of 15 Yachts lined up for the annual Heads Race. We welcomed a contigent from Naval Point – Full Circle, Shibbeen, Legacy 2 and Topaz as well as Otter and Akaroa III (a big catamaran). In addition we welcomed Lightly Oiled, Farrst Forward, and Penzance who all stated for the first time this season. Farrst Forward was a clear winner across the line in 2.37.44, almost 25 ahead of Transition and 30 seconds later Meltdown. Please click the link below for the full line and handicap results. We would like to thank Jason Walker of Walker Architecture for sponsoring this race. Whether its a shelter for your Dinghy or a boatshed for your Superyacht they can design just what you need (not to mention all the usual buildings and structures).
December 18 – Oborn’s Nautical Series Races 4, 5 & 6 – Sprint Races and Series Finale
Only 3 boats lined up for the final day of the Oborn’s Nautical series on a dully and drizzly day with light Sou-westerly winds. The first race was between Green Point and Children’s Bay and was won by Meltdown, followed by One Way and then Armalite. Te cecond race saw the fleet off to Green Point, Lushingtons and return and then home. Again the winner was Meltdown followed (more closely this time) by One Way and then Armalite. The final race was to the Kaik and back and again Meltdown was first home this time followed by Armalite and then One Way. For the full results today and the overall series points please click on the link below. There is no sailing next weekend (Christmas Day). November 26 – Saunders Robinson Brown Lawyers Two Handed Series
A fleet of 4 lined up for the first two handed race of the season. Less than 30 seconds before the scheduled start the wind, which had been steady, dropped right away and it actually took over 2 minutes for the first boat to reach the start line and the wind was very variable throughout. Course 10 was chosen which took the fleet to the Kaik and then to Tikau and by then Meltdown had built up a good lead. From there they sailed to the Paua farm and the course was shortened meaning they came straight home. Meltdown was first, then Hyperactive, Armalite and Future One. Fortunately there were no protests but if there had been our Sponsors, Saunders Robinson Brown Lawyers would be just the people to call. Click the link below for the full results

November 20 – Oborn’s Nautical Series Race 1
Four boats lined up for the first race in the Oborn’s series including Future One who was sailed single handed by Keith Molloy. The course chosen was Course 19 where the vast majority of the time the fleet is out of sight of the start box so you will need to read the newsletter for the story of the race. Meltdown finished first just ahead of Transition and then One Way with a very meritorious Future One not that far behind. Click the link below for the full results. Thanks to Oborn’s Nautical for their sponsorship and we encourage skippers to utilize their services.

November 13 – Black Cat Series Races 4, 5 & 6 (Sprint Races)
A series of 3 sprint races concluded our first series of the season. Four yachts came to the start on a gorgeous late spring day. The first race was delayed slightly as we waited for the wind to arrive but 0nce that occurred the steady souwesterlies made for good racing. The first race went to Green Point, Lushingtons and back and and then to a really tight finish where Meltdown won over Transition by 3 seconds. The second race was Green Point to Childrens Bay twice where all Akaroa’s visitors could see what was going on. Once again Meltdown won in a tight finish, this time ahead of One Way. The final race was an all-out sprint to the Kaik and back with Transition just pipping Meltdown and Armalite chasing down One Way in the last few meters. With the boats able to discard their worst result the series came down to the last race and if you click the link below you will find out what happened. Once again we would like to thank Black Cat Cruises for their sponsorship. Next week we start the Oborns Nautical Series with a 1400 start.

November 6 – Black Cat Cruises Series Race 3
A fleet of four lined up for the second harbour race of the season with northerlies throughout. Course 17 was chosen and most started well. Meltdown led round the first mark at Childrens Bay and headed off to Green Point. From there they sailed to Lushingtons with Meltdown and Transition close together in what was to be a tight battle for the rest of the race. The next leg was to the Kaik, then back to Lushingtons, Green Point and then home where Meltdown prevailed by less than a minute over Transition then One Way and Armalite. Click link below to viewthe full results. Next week will feature the annual golf day on Saturday and the Black Cat Cruises series will conclude with 3 sprint races (and the possibility of a drop) starting at 1300. Many thanks to our sponsor – Black Cat Cruises – A great way to view the harbour.
Black Cat Cruises Series Race 3
October 30 – Black Cat Cruises Series Race 2 – Long Harbour Race
Yet another lovely sailing day for our first Long Harbour Race of the season with a challenging nor-easterly. Transition won the start and was first around at Childrens Bay and Green point then they headed off to Robinsons Bay. From there the fleet sailed to Tikau and on this leg Meltdown lived up to her name when the mainsail halyard broke, forcing them to withdraw. The fleet then returned to Robinsons Bay before heading to Mark 7 (the Paua Farm). Unfortunately the buoy could not be found so the leading boat, Transition, called a fixed point for the turn. Transition finished first followed by One Way and Armalite. For full results click the link below. We would like to thank our sponsors, Black Cat cruises, who provide a much less strenuous harbour experience
